Paddington Bear - Thomas Michael Bond
The classic story of everyone’s favourite bear, Paddington first met the Brown family at a railway station – Paddington Station, in fact. He had travelled all the way from Darkest Peru with only a jar of marmalade, a suitcase and a label reading ‘Please look after this bear’. Without further ado, Mr and Mrs Brown welcomed the adventurous bear into their family, and in honour of their meeting place they named him Paddington. The Browns soon discover that Paddington is a most unusual bear, for ordinary things – like having a bath – become quite extraordinary when a bear called Paddington is around.

Geography/ History
History- Great Inventors
In this unit, the children will be investigating inventors such as Alex Bell, Karl Benz and the Wright Brothers. We will be using sources to compare similarities and differences between phones, cars and aeroplanes from the past and present. We will be looking at the difference between primary and secondary sources and using a timeline to understand when these inventions were made in history.
Science
Seasonal Changes- To observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies Using everyday language/begin to use simple scientific words to ask or answer a scientific question.
Educational Visit
Canalside- Fruit Farm Experience
Paddington Bear loves a pot of fruit jam. As the children immerse themselves into the stories of Paddington Bear they will visit Canalside Farm.
The children will visit the pick you own' strawberries part of the farm and will enjoy the freedom of wandering up and down the fruit field with their very own pick your own' basket.
The Colours of the Rainbow workshop involves an interactive session with the children discussing, looking, touching and tasting different coloured fruits and vegetables. We start off with a fun and active "bean game'. We get a large selection of fruit and veg out of the shop and talk about the benefits of each 'colour group' le: the different vitamins, minerals and how they help to support a healthy body. For example broccoli being full of calcium that supports bone health.
Children then try different chopped fruits and veg - maybe trying something new, And also discuss where and how different fruits and veg grow. We would have a look at our tomato, cucumber and strawberry plants growing.
We finish off by creating individual posters. Following this will be the strawberry picking and the children can pick a small (raspberry punnet size) pot of strawberries to take home.

To know how kind and unkind behaviour can affect others; how to be polite and courteous; how to play and work co-operatively. To understand the responsibilities, they have in and out of the classroom. To know how people and animals need to be looked after and cared for. RE – Who is Jewish and how do they live?
The children will talk about what they think is good about reflecting, thanking, praising and remembering for Jewish people, giving a goof reason for their ideas.

Art – Our artist focus is Henri Rousseau. We will be focusing on observing patterns and exploring a variety of textures
D&T – Our focus is mechanisms; creating a moving story book. Exploring slider mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a moving story book.
Music – Reflect, rewind and replay. Looking at western classical music.

The story follows of tale of a postman who delivers letters by bicycle to different fairytale characters that are well known in Britain.

We will be diving into the recent past and exploring the life and legacy of some of the most famous people in history.
Why was Florence Nightingale so important? Who was Neil Armstrong? What did Christopher Columbus discover? We will also answer the question: how did they contribute to international history?

Plants
We will be growing our own plants so that we can observe the changes that a seed or bulb will go through. We will also be exploring common wild plants and trees and explore what an evergreen and deciduous tree is. We will use our observation skills and new knowledge to label the parts of common plants and trees.
Educational Visit
Brampton Museum – A Florence Nightingale workshop. We will be exploring the life and legacy of Florence Nightingale and what was so interesting about her life!

PSHE – Who helps to keep us safe?
We will understand who can help us and what to do if we feel unsafe. We will continue our discussions about safe and trusted adults and talk about what to do to make sure we are heard by these
RE – Who is Jewish and how do they live?
We will recognise the words of the Shema as a Jewish prayer and talk about stories that are special in Jewish celebrations. We will look at how Jewish people celebrate special times, and make links between Jewish ideas of God found in the stories and how people live. We will talk about what we think is good about reflecting, thanking, praising and remembering for Jewish people too.

We will be focusing on using a range of materials creatively to design and make products, exploring textures and observing and drawing landscapes using observations and imagination.
DT – Making a moving story book
We will explore slider mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a moving storybook based on the Greatest People topic.
Music – Your Imagination
In this unit we will explore songs that focus around our imagination. We will learn a range of songs and begin to improvise these using our previously learnt skills.

Old Bear – Jane Hissey
It’s time to bring Old Bear back to the playroom! Old Bear has been up in the attic for a very long time, but he hasn’t been forgotten. Bramwell Brown leads the toys on a rescue mission to bring their friend, Old Bear, safely back home.
We will be focusing on a setting description and sequencing and retelling the story. We will also look at acrostic poems.

Geography/ History
Geography – Let’s Take a Trip Overseas!
The children will explore and start to understand continents, places that are near/far and we will look at the UK in more detail. We will gain an understanding of north, south, east and west. We will look at the surrounding oceans and how Mali, Timbuktu (Africa) is similar and different to London using human and physical geography.
Science
Animals including Humans
We will be covering carnivores, omnivores and herbivores and identifying and naming specific animals that eat these food types. We are looking at the structure of these animals.
Educational Visit
Peak Wildlife – we will be carrying out workshops looking at animals and their habitats and what they eat. This links to our Science topic Animals including Humans.

PSHE – What can we do with money?
We will understand what money is, how it comes in different forms and begin to learn how money is obtained. We will also recognise how people make choices about what to do with money and the difference between needs/wants. Know how to keep money safe and list some of the different ways of
doing this.
RE – Why does Easter matter to Christians?
We will be focusing on telling stories of Holy Week and Easter from the Bible and recognise that Incarnation and Salvation are part of a ‘big story’ of the Bible. We will look at how Christians show their beliefs about Jesus’ death and resurrection in church worship at Easter. Finally we will think, talk and ask questions about whether the story of
Easter only has something to say to Christians, or if it has anything to say to pupils about sadness, hope or heaven.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Pablo Picasso.
We will be focusing on colour, drawing and printing skills.
DT – We are drink makers.
We will design our own smoothie and select simple tools, use them appropriately and begin to evaluate the taste.

Jack and the Beanstalk by Ed Bryan
Jack climbs the stalk in hopes of finding food. He comes across a town among the clouds and is helped by a magic fairy to find a giant's castle (home to the giant who killed Jack's father). Jack eventually steals a magic hen and gold coins from the giant.

They will then go on to learn about the place value of numbers up to 50.
Geography/ History
Geography – Our local area: What is it like where we live?
Children will explore the local area around us. We will be learning about where it is that we live in our country and city. We will also discuss the human and physical properties of Stoke-on-Trent. We will be able to draw on our skills and knowledge of the United Kingdom to locate Stoke-on-Trent on a map.
Science
Animals including humans
This half term we will be able to name and identify a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. We will also be able to compare the structure of these animals.

Year 1 will be able to immerse ourselves into our Geography topic of ‘Our local area’. We will explore the background of Stoke-on-Trent and just how talented the people of our local area are.

PSHE/RSE – What helps us stay healthy?
This half term, we will explore what is means to be healthy – we will discuss the important people in our lives that can help us to be healthy for example, parents, teachers, doctors. We will begin to understand that what we put into our bodies will have an effect on how we will feel. We will understand how medicines will help us to be healthy and that some people need to take medicines every day in order to remain healthy.
RE – How should we care for the world and for others? And why does it matter?
During this half term, we will be able to identify a story or text that says something about each person being unique and valuable. We will be able to give an example of a key believe that some people find in these stories, for example that God loves all people. We will be able to give examples of how people show that they care for others e.g. by giving to charity. We will be able to give examples of how Christians and Jews can show care for the natural Earth.

Art – Our artist focus is Pablo Picasso
In year 1 we will explore the artist Pablo Picasso and observe his work. We will use a variety of drawing tools to create patterns after observing them. We will be able to develop impressed images whilst naming and understand all colours and shades. We will go on to mix colours for a purpose and apply colour with a range of tools.
D&T – Our focus is Fruit and Vegetables
We will be able to identify if a food is a fruit or vegetable. We will start to identify where plants grow and which parts we eat. We are looking forward to tasting different fruits and vegetables to compare them. Finally, we will use all of this knowledge to make a fruit and vegetable smoothie.
Music – In the groove
PE day
Our PE Day will be on a Wednesday. This half term, year 1 will become Groovy Gymnastics. We will use our bodies to be able to balance. We will also link our PE learning with our PSHE to link in with our hygiene, health and medicines.

Gingerbread Man – Miriam Latimer
The cheeky little gingerbread man is having so much fun! He scurries away from Mr and Mrs Baker and all the hungry animals, but then he meets a crafty fox . . . Will the gingerbread man meet a sticky end? The children will read the fairy tale story “The Gingerbread Man” They will begin to develop their reading and
writing skills through a variety of genres—including sequencing and retelling the events of the story. We will start to focus on time connectives (first, then, next, last).

Geography – UK Adventures – What do you know about the UK cities and seas?
This geography unit focuses on naming and locating the 4 countries of the United Kingdom. We will use maps and atlases to name capital cities and use aerial photographs to recognise UK landmarks. The children will name and locate the surrounding seas of the UK.

Everyday Materials
We will be distinguishing between an object and the material from what it has been made. Year 1 will describe the simple properties of a variety of everyday materials and they will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials.

RE – Why does Christmas matter to Christians?
We will recognise that stories of Jesus’ life come from the Gospels and Year 1 will give a clear, simple account of the story of Jesus’ birth and why Jesus is important for Christians. We also give examples of ways in which Christians use the story of the Nativity to guide their beliefs and actions at Christmas.

We will look at individual preferences and requirements in designs of houses and we will make a stable structure of a dream house.
We will assemble the components of structures and the children will evaluate their projects and adapt their designs.
