Paddington Bear – Michael Bond
The Paddington Bear books have been a family favourite for many years and the children will certainly enjoy reading all about this loveable bear. They will show of their range of writing skills during story writing lessons, sequencing and retelling the story. The
children will also be writing letters/postcards to the Brown family and postcards back to Paddington’s Aunt Lucy in Peru.

Great Inventions – Can we name and explore some great inventions?
In this History unit, the children will be investigating inventors such as Alex Bell, Karl Benz and the Wright Brothers.
We will be using sources to compare similarities and differences between phones, cars and aeroplanes from the past and present.

Seasonal Changes
We will be observing changes across the four seasons and describe the weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.

PSHE – How can we look after each other and the world?
We will focus on how people and animals need to be looked after and cared for. We will understand what can harm the local and global environment and begin to understand how the children can help and care for it.
RE – What makes some placed sacred to believers?
We will be recognising some of the words of the Shema as a Jewish prayer and know how Jewish ideas of God impact the lives of believers. We will find out how Jewish people remember God in different ways.

We will be focusing on observing patterns and exploring a variety of textures.
DT – Making a moving story book (Mechanisms)
We will explore simple mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a moving storybook.
Music – Reflect, Rewind and Replay
This Unit of Work consolidates the learning that has occurred during the year. All the learning is focused around revisiting songs and musical activities, a context for the History of Music and the beginnings of the Language of Music.

Man on the moon – Simon Bartram
Meet Bob, everyone’s favourite man on the moon! Let’s propel ourselves into outer space and explore Bob’s world. Once there, we will be writing home to let everyone on earth know what life on the moon is really like.
We’ll also be describing Bob; giving us the chance to show off our fabulous adjective skills and develop our sentence writing.

History – The greatest people!
We will be diving into the recent past and exploring the life and legacy of some of the most famous people in history.
Why was Florence Nightingale so important? Who was Neil Armstrong? What did Christopher Columbus discover? We will also answer the question: how did they contribute to international history?
Science
Plants
We will be growing our own plants so that we can observe the changes that a seed or bulb will go through. We will also be exploring common wild plants and trees and explore what an evergreen and deciduous tree is. We will use our observation skills and new knowledge to label the parts of common plants and trees.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
PSHE – Who helps to keep us safe?
We will understand who can help us and what to do if we feel unsafe. We will continue our discussions about safe and trusted adults and talk about what to do to make sure we are heard by these.
RE – Who is Jewish and how do they live?
We will recognise the words of the Shema as a Jewish prayer and talk about stories that are special in Jewish celebrations. We will look at how Jewish people celebrate special times, and make links between Jewish ideas of God found in the stories and how people live. We will talk about what we think is good about reflecting, thanking, praising and remembering for Jewish people too.

We will be focusing on using a range of materials creatively to design and make products, exploring textures and observing and drawing landscapes using observations and imagination.
DT – Making a moving story book
We will explore slider mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a moving storybook based on the Greatest People topic.
Music – Your Imagination
In this unit we will explore songs that focus around our imagination. We will learn a range of songs and begin to improvise these using our previously learnt skills.

Spring 2

Old Bear – Jane Hissey
It’s time to bring Old Bear back to the playroom! Old Bear has been up in the attic for a very long time, but he hasn’t been forgotten. Bramwell Brown leads the toys on a rescue mission to bring their friend, Old Bear, safely back home.
We will be focusing on a setting description and sequencing and retelling the story. We will also look at acrostic poems.

Geography/ History
Geography – Let’s Take a Trip Overseas! Where in the world are we?
The children will explore and start to understand continents, places that are near/far and we will look at the UK in more detail. We will gain an understanding of north, south, east and west. We will look at the surrounding oceans and how Mali, Timbuktu (Africa) is similar and different to London using human and physical geography.
Science
Animals including Humans
We will be covering carnivores, omnivores and herbivores and identifying and naming specific animals that eat these food types. We are looking at the structure of these animals.
Educational Visit
Peak Wildlife – we will be carrying out workshops looking at animals and their habitats and what they eat. This links to our Science topic Animals including Humans.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
PSHE – What can we do with money?
We will understand what money is, how it comes in different forms and begin to learn how money is obtained. We will also recognise how people make choices about what to do with money and the difference between needs/wants. Know how to keep money safe and list some of the different ways of
doing this.
RE – Why does Easter matter to Christians?
We will be focusing on telling stories of Holy Week and Easter from the Bible and recognise that Incarnation and Salvation are part of a ‘big story’ of the Bible. We will look at how Christians show their beliefs about Jesus’ death and resurrection in church worship at Easter. Finally, we will think, talk and ask questions about whether the story of Easter only has something to say to Christians, or if it has anything to say to pupils about sadness, hope or heaven. Provide good reason for their ideas.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Pablo Picasso.
We will be focusing on colour, drawing and printing skills.
DT – We are drink makers.
We will design our own smoothie and select simple tools, use them appropriately and begin to evaluate the taste.
Music – Round and Round.
The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

Spring 1
My Family History
This half term our English text will be ‘If I were King’ which will take us on a wonderful journey of a young boy who wishes he could get away from his annoying baby brother; however, he soon misses him and wishes he could go back to his ‘ordinary’ life. We will be describing the main character, Thomas, before writing instructions about owning a castle as well as writing a letter to our actual King!
Our history topic is My Family History: What was life like when our grandparents were children? The children will explore similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people their grandparents’ age. We will focus on different topics, including homes, toys, shops and schools. We would love to hear any stories from the children’s grandparents about their life as a child!
Autumn 2
People and their Communities
This half term our English focus will be ‘fairy tales’. Our focus will be on Jack and the Beanstalk and the children will be writing character descriptions and sequencing the story. We will continue to work on our sentence skills and applying our phonic knowledge in our writing. We are getting very excited for our educational visit to the theatre!
During Mathematics this half term, we will be looking at addition and subtraction. Children will write addition facts and count within twenty. We will recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes and consider their patterns.
Our Geography topic is “UK Adventures.” In this topic we will look at the countries that make up the United Kingdom and discuss what each country is famous for and discuss its landmarks. We will travel around the UK and discuss places we have been already and locate these on a map.
Autumn 1
Our Local Area
This half term we will exploring the magical story of 'The Bog Baby'. We will be retelling the story and writing all about the sister's adventures in Bluebell woods. In our phonics sessions we will be focussing on practising the sounds and skills we learnt in reception.
In maths we will focus on place value; practicing our counting skills and learning to write numbers as words.
Our Geography topic focuses on the local area around us and we will be learning about where we live in the country and city and discussing the human and physical features of the area.
