Year 5 visit the Jorvik Centre
On Tuesday 15th November, we made our way on the coach to the Jorvik Centre in York to learn more about the Vikings which is what we are studying this term.
When entering the Jorvik Centre we were greeted by people who were dressed like the Vikings and gave us some information about what had been found in the exact spot we were standing on – a small Viking settlement. We got to role play what it was like to live in those times as well as ask questions about what had been found by the archaeologists.
We then went on a ride which took us around what the Viking settlement would have looked like, smelt like and sounded like all of those hundreds of years ago. It was fantastic and the smells smelt very real! We had to cover our noses for some it!
After that we got to look round the gallery and see some of the artefacts and bones of Viking men and women that had been discovered. We had some more people from the centre tell us stories from that period.
Despite the rain, we managed to walk around some of the streets of York including the castle before heading back to school. We had a brilliant time and learnt lots that we can now take back to school an use in our history lessons.
